Principles of Microeconomics (ECN-2030) – Fall 2021
“Economics is the art of making the most out of life”–Gary Becker
Principles of Macroeconomics
Prof. Ali Zeytoon-Nejad
Instructions for the Article Project
Objectives of the Project: This project aims to help you start using economic concepts and theories in
analyzing real-world economic events and phenomena around you, and also incorporate real-world
economic events into the classroom. In fact, this assignment is designed to enhance your economic skills
in analyzing everyday situations.
Description of the Project: In your paper, use an economic concept, principle, model, or theory that we
have discussed in class to explain some current economic events that you have found in a newspaper or
other credible news sources.
Parts of the Project: Your final report is expected to consist of seven parts: (1) your personal and class
information (full name, student’s ID, course title, and section number), (2) the title of the article you have
read, (3) referencing the source of the article (APA Style1), (4) a short summary of the article, (5) a main
discussion in which you explain the economics associated with the article you have selected, (6) one or
more original diagrams and curves and graphs or concepts2 (e.g. a money supply/demand model) of
the economics discussed in the article, and (7) a printed copy of the original article (which you put after
your final draft), and the first draft of your essay, the peer review report you have received from your
classmate, as well as the peer review report you have given to your classmate, respectively, as
attachments to your final report.
Writing Style and Length: The writing should be in the form of standard academic writing, along with
clear exposition and correct grammar. The minimum length for the assignment is three pages and the
maximum is five pages (diagrams included). Please note that this assignment is not meant to be lengthy or
heavily in-depth, as it is not supposed to be a Master’s thesis or a Ph.D. dissertation. Instead, you are
expected to come up with an explanation for an economic idea that is understandable to a layperson such
as a relative or a friend who has never taken a course in economics. Your main job in this project is to
explain well your graph or diagram (e.g. a supply/demand model) or concept. However, after all, if
you want to get full credit for this article project, the writing and formatting of your essay are expected to
be professional and academic.
Appropriate Sources to Use: For this project, you can use news and articles only from well-known and
reputable sources such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, USA
. You can search on Google to see how you need to cite a “newspaper article” using the APA format. An example
link to access such information is as follows: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/10/
2
. If it is hard for you to connect the article to one of the diagrams or curves that we have learned, you can instead
focus on one of the “concepts” that we have learned in this class and connect the article to that concept.
1
Today, Daily News, New York Post, Washington Post, and The Economist. Personal blogs, personal
websites, letters to the editor, and other such potentially unreliable sources may not be used without prior
approval from me. Articles may NOT be dated earlier than January 1, 2021. The UNCP academic
integrity policies apply to this project, just as it does to all other activities in this class, so you must do
your own work. Please also note that your diagrams and curves and graphs must be original, and be done
by yourself, and be similar to an economic model we have covered in class. There are multiple websites
available online using which you can draw your diagrams and curves and graphs free of charge. You can
also draw your diagrams manually but it has to be done neatly.

First draft submission is due on Thursday, November 11th (to be submitted to your peerreviewer via email and CC me at Salizeym@gmail.com – Note: You can find the email address
of your peer-reviewer in the other file uploaded on Canvas next to the article project file).
Peer review submission is due on Thursday, November 18th (to be submitted via email to the
person you have done the peer-review for and CC me at Salizeym@gmail.com).
Final draft submission is due on Tuesday, November 23rd (to be uploaded on Canvas). Please
know that you do not have to wait until the deadline to submit your projects. In fact, you can
submit your project any time prior to the deadline as well. The deadline is the latest day/time that
your submission is accepted. Thus, start as soon as possible!
Grading Criteria: The essay project will be graded on the basis of the following criteria:
Components
First draft 3
Peer review 4 (For the purpose of peer review, check and comment on your classmate’s first
draft using the items mentioned below, which are the items based on which your final draft will
be graded. The minimum length for the peer review report is one full page and the maximum is
two pages. Please staple your review report to the end of your classmate’s first draft and hand it
to me by its deadline.)5
Criteria for grading your final draft:
Is the article topic relevant, interesting, current, and from a credible source?
Is the essay well-written and in line with the standard academic writing style?
(flawless writing, with neither typos nor misspellings, and without other mechanical problems)
Does the summary successfully introduce the article setting and background?
(capturing what was essential to the reading with the fewest number of words possible)
Does the main discussion use and integrate economic concepts, principles, models, and/or
theories correctly? Is the economic argument provided complete and well-explained? Is the
economics explained in the paper logically correct?
Incorporating and taking advantage of helpful comments from your classmate’s peer review
report
Is the graph or diagram presented aesthetically neat, legibly labeled, and conceptually correct?

. When providing feedback on your classmate’s work, you need to make sure that your feedback is Constructive (help
to improve and avoid being too negative), Specific (include explanations and examples and page or line numbers),
Balanced (highlight both strengths and areas for improvement), Succinct (write briefly and coherently), and
Respectful (do not make your reader feel attacked, and think about how you would feel if you received the review).

Is the length of the essay within the specified limit (3-5 pages)?
Total Possible Points:
5
100
Note: Your essay should be typed double-spaced on A4 standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″) with 1″
margins on all sides. You should use Times New Roman font with the size of 12 pt. Please include a
page header (also known as the “running head”) at the top of every page. To create a page header/running
head, insert page numbers flush right, as explained by the APA at the following link:
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ You can also see some examples of header/running
head at the mentioned link. Then, type “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER” in the header flush left using all
capital letters. The running head is a shortened version of your paper’s title and cannot exceed 50
characters including spacing and punctuation.6
Note: To give you some freedom of choice, I would accept this project even if you use a movie, a
documentary, or a book, in which you have found a relevant economic concept, principle, model, or
theory that we have discussed in class. Note that all the instructions and rules outlined above would still
apply to your assignment submission if you choose to do the project using a movie, a documentary, or a
book.
Enjoy doing your project!
Some Additional Considerations:
• You do not have to have a title page, but it will be more professional to have one if you want.
• The article you select to work on does not have to have a diagram/graph. In fact, you are
supposed to draw a diagram/graph for it (of one of the economic models that we have learned in
this course).
• You need to use at least one article and have at least one diagram in your submission and if you
use more articles or have more diagrams, that should not be a problem, and that would be even
better.
• When sending your papers to and communicating with your peers regarding their papers or your
paper or their peer-reviews or your peer-review or following up on any of these, you will need to
CC me at this address, Salizeym@gmail.com, so that I can see who is not replying or who has
not done their jobs on time, just in case needed. Please do NOT CC me through my regular email
address for these purposes.
• If your peer does not send his or her paper to you on time, or if he or she does not send you his or
her peer-review report on your paper on time, you do not have to email me. In that case, you just
put a note on the first page of your final submission on Canvas about this along with the name of
that student at the end of your note and just explain it there for me. This will not affect your
grade, but it will affect that person’s grade.
Good luck!

. If there is any other aspect of the article project about which this set of instructions is silent, then it means it is left
up to you to decide about them. Thus, for such potential items, you should make decisions personally and according
to your tastes and preferences.
