Did you ever think about this? Why does social class exist? Why and how was it created, why does it continue, and what purpose does it serve? Why are some rich and some poor? Is it just a power difference? Functional theory says stratification is necessary for society! Conflict theory says it just depends on who has the power (primarily economic power)! Conflict theory calls it the Iron Law of Oligarchy: people in power tend to stay in power and have the means to do so. Rich people’s kids go to private schools, elite colleges, and inherit their parents wealth and position. Poor people’s kids go to low quality, public schools in poor neighborhoods and struggle to go to college, if at all. Conflict theory says it is not who is smart and motivated; it is who has the best/worst opportunity. Functional theory says that people who fill important, necessary jobs (such as doctors, lawyers, top administrators, and chief executives) get paid more due to the importance of the job. Thus, important jobs are paid more money than less important jobs. People would not be attracted to these important jobs if they were not paid so highly. People would not be motivated to go to college and med school, law school, and grad school if they were not going to make more money. Society would suffer since these important jobs would go unfilled. Functional theorists say if you are smart enough and work hard enough, you can get to the top no matter where you start. Conflict theory says important jobs such as police, firefighters, teachers, EMTs, and soldiers, for example, are very necessary for society and yet are not highly paid. Yet actors, actresses, and sports figures, for example, even though highly skilled, are not necessary for the functioning of society but are very highly paid.
