We feel empathy for the main character, Chiron, when we watch and see the difficulties he goes through and explores the challenges he faces with his sexuality and identity, including the physical and emotional abuse he endures growing up. Yes, I believe Moonlight does fit into the American Independence Cinema category. The film focuses on realism and marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ community. Moonlight is different from most American independent films in that it is a realistic portrayal of black life in America. The film also has a more sensitive and thoughtful approach to the coming-of-age story. These elements make Moonlight a unique and thought-provoking film that will appeal to both independent film fans. The film also has an all-black cast. We feel empathy for Chiron when we watch and see the difficulties he goes through. While Moonlight may not be appealing to a mainstream audience, I think it is an important film that highlights the struggles of the LGBTQ community. https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/2/27/14748332/moonlight-best-picture-why-it-wonhttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_(2016_film) https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/feb/16/moonlight-review-masculinity-naomie-harris#:~:text=Moonlight%20is%20about%20a%20young,are%20getting%20them%20delivered%20intravenously.
