Moonlight using flashbacks, tells the story of a young black man named Chiron, who grows up in Miami through three stages of his life, from his childhood to adulthood. His encounter as a kid with the drug dealer Juan who takes care of him in his own way, and as a teenager dealing with Juan’s death, he realizes he likes Kevin his childhood in a different way and dealing with a school bully, Terrel getting arrested after attacking Terrel who pushed him his limits, and later we see Chiron grown up selling drugs reuniting Kevin later as an adult .film explores the difficulties a person goes through to understand their place in the world and the different people who have impacted them. We feel empathy for the main character, Chiron, when we watch and see the difficulties he goes through and explores the challenges he faces with his sexuality and identity, including the physical and emotional abuse he endures growing up. Yes, I believe Moonlight does fit into the American Independence Cinema category. The film focuses on realism and marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ community. Moonlight is different from most American independent films in that it is a realistic portrayal of black life in America. The film also has a more sensitive and thoughtful approach to the coming-of-age story. These elements make Moonlight a unique and thought-provoking film that will appeal to both independent film fans. The film also has an all-black cast. We feel empathy for Chiron when we watch and see the difficulties he goes through.
