This includes their risk factor for many diseases. It is important to know a patient’s true habits and behaviors along with a family history to gauge their risk. That is why many insurers also need to know an individual’s habits, to determine whether the company will have to pay in the unfortunate event of hospitalizations and treatments for specific diseases. Cancer affects many individuals. As we know, many lifestyle factors can increase risk of cancer such as tobacco use, nutrition, alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical activity just to name a few (McCance et al., 2019. P. 388-399.) In a utopia of a world, I believe the factors of a human’s lifestyle should not affect their ability to receive care or treatment including insurance. According to research, there must be a “commitment to health equity- that is, aiming to achieve optimal health for everyone, giving particular attention to the needs of those most at risk for health” (Alcaraz et al., 2019.) In my opinion, this information should not be used to determine a person’s mortality but rather a chance for education of healthier and achievable options.
