Increasing the number of states that allows FNPs to have full practice authority is one way we can address the primary care provider shortage and the poor access of rural healthcare. More nurse practitioners work in rural areas of states that grant full practice authority to nurse practitioners (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2021). When nurse practitioners have full practice authority, it has also been shown to lower the financial costs of insurance companies and the patient because lab tests are not repeated and lowers the amount of visits of the patient due to the nurse practitioner being able to provide equal services as a physician (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2021). Currently, nurse practitioners have full authority practice in twenty-three states, Washington D.C., and some U.S. territories (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2021). Legislation must continue to be pushed for granting nurse practitioners full practice authority in more states to help meet the healthcare needs in rural populations and improve the primary care provider shortage.
