There is such a shortage of healthcare professionals right now and an increasing number of patients getting ill each day especially since the onset of the pandemic. Nurse-to-patient ratios are increasing leaving less time to perform more tasks. This does not account for other staffing issues such as call off’s and no-call no-shows either. It puts more pressure on the staff to ensure that each patient receives quality care and sometimes this gets a bit lost during the discharge process as the focus then shifts to the next critical client. I think that nurses’ education matters to some degree but should not matter in the sense that all nurses despite the level of their degree should be taught to educate and reinforce the teaching of their patients. For instance, as an LPN in school, patient education was lightly touched on with the understanding that we are to reinforce and RN’s are to educate. As an RN student, this is a huge focus as it is expected of the RN. Now if you think about the demographics of certain facilities, with nursing homes and assisted living facilities mostly having LPN’s and not RN’s you can determine how much emphasis will be placed upon educating patients. That is not to say that the LPN won’t educate the patient but it may not be as thorough as the RN because the focus in LPN school is based upon more skills training than leadership, management, and education. This is why I have an issue sometimes when I hear certain teachers state that LPN’s are not able to accomplish and perform tasks that an RN can perform. I know firsthand that this is false because in an assisted living facility there is no difference between the two they both perform the same day-to-day task. As an LPN I have also been in several leadership positions including that of a DON. I say that to say that if the educational structure for both LPNs and RNs were the same across the board, placing a focus and heavy emphasis on educating the patients and families in both sectors this may not be as much of an issue as it is now.
