The action can also be apart of the plot of an epic which is best shown in The Nun’s Priest Tale because the actions are demonstrated by showing how Chauntecleer has to overcome his fear. Instead of the epic showing how courage is shown greatly among Chauntecleer like most epics do, the epic shows how he lacks courage throughout the story. The epic describes Chauntecleer as strong and handsome. Chaucer described Chauntecleer as “this gentil cok hadde in his governaunce” (Chaucer 336 line 99), Chaucer is describing Chauntecleer as noble and in control which would allow the reader to assume that Chauntecleer would be brave and strong since he demonstrated himself as such. This contributes to the plot by showing how the appearance of courage will give Chauntecleer personality and character development. This will contribute to actions later on in the story. However, Chaucer steers the epic in another direction when danger presents itself to Chauntecleer. Although Chauntecleer is known to be one of the strongest and noblest hens, he shows he is afraid of something as simple as a dream, “certes this dreem which ye han met tonyght” (Chaucer 337 line 160). The dream scares Chauntecleer which causes him not to sleep and even his lover Pertelote tells him it is just merely a dream. This shows the lack of courage and foreshadows the future event where Chauntecleer faces the hungry fox. In this scene Chauntecleer runs and does not fight the fox. In most epics, the hero would have showed courage and act by fighting the fox. Instead Chauntecleer runs and uses tactics to fly away from the fox. Which leads to how this epic is a mock epic. This epic includes most of what a generic epic would include however, the twist is how the actions or plot is interpreted. Courage is an important theme and act of most plots in epics because it creates the heroes characteristics and personality. However, The Nun’s Priest’s hero lacks courage and is shown to share heroic traits like handsomeness and strength yet lacks the main important element which is courage and the deeds and actions throughout the play lacks courage.
