The theoretical perspective that I chose is Vygotsky’s cognitive development theory. My theoretical analysis is According to Vygotsky’s theory, the most effective way of supporting a student is by providing the appropriate learning environment. Taking Timmy out of the classroom and placing him in a resource room does not work for him because it is not an environment where he will be challenged appropriately. This is because his peers are too advanced leaving him without the opportunity to learn from their mistakes, and his teacher is unable to provide individualized instruction due to her lack of time with Timmy. This leads us to believe that with additional support in the form of an aide working with Timmy on a one-on-one basis, or joining a group specifically designed for students with disabilities mentoring would be more beneficial as opposed to isolating him away from his peers.The cognitive development theory by Lev Vygotsky would be used to discuss the theoretical analysis of this scenario. This scenario involves two parties, the child’s mother, who is the “adult” (more experienced and knowledgeable) with respect to the child and his social issues, and the teacher who is an “expert” and has knowledge of her job requirements. The teacher is also in a position of authority over both the student and his mother. In that sense, she considers herself more powerful or higher up on this hierarchy as she can enforce consequences for failing to obey her orders. In Vygotsky’s theory, it provides for different levels of development over time in which people learn from others around them as well as depending on each other as a source of knowledge and support as seen through games when children play together.
