The high mountainous peaks of the Taurus Mountains of the southern part of this land provided water to flow into the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Mesopotamia whose name means, the land between two rivers was an optimal graphical location for planting crops and feeding animals. This water source which was abundant in Springtime, allowed these once nomadic tribes to settle into this region. Upon doing so, they began to domesticate animals and cultivate their agricultural practices. The first known levees and waterway systems were found in this region, as these ancient peoples recognized the need to control water flow in order to sustain the animals and land during dry seasons. These people’s desire to understand the seasonal patterns of this area led to the creation of a calendar that was based on observations of the moon and stars. This type of timekeeping was necessary for these people to anticipate weather patterns and allow them to use their resources in the most optimal way.Without the need to travel the land to find food, these ancient peoples now began to build stationary communities which provided for all of their needs. These reivers would also serve as transportation routes, which helped expand the reach of the area they populated. For the people now known as the Sumerians, it was establishing themselves in this water-rich geographical location that allowed them to thrive.  ResourcesThe Calendar and the System of Irrigation – A look into Ancient Sumer: Technology. Some inventions are writing, papyrus sheets for writing on, medicine, math, pyramids, eye makeup, toothpaste, and more. Art and architecture are still being studied today.
