Hannah is 34 years-old and G1P0. She delivers a 6-pound male infant in the Emergency Department. Initially, Mother and infant appear to be bonding well. Hannah’s nurse, Nancy Nice notices that Hannah’s pallor has changed and she appears very pale. Hannah tells the nurse that she is very tired and has no energy. Nancy checks Hannah’s vital signs and in the process notices that the under-pads Hannah is lying on are very wet with bloody fluid. Nancy suspects Hannah is suffering from postpartum hemorrhage. Nancy motions for the ER Resident to enter Hannah’s cubicle and he immediately calls the blood bank to order a Type and Cross on Hannah’s blood sample that had been collected earlier in the ER.RRH has a small blood bank and Sanguine Sally is a new MLS employed by the Blood Bank. Sally answers the blood bank phone at midnight. She receives Hannah’s sample and determines that her blood type is B (RhD) negative. Sally knows that RRH does not have any B (RhD) negative units available. She has no O (RhD) negative units but she does have A (RhD) negative and O (RhD) positive units. She calls the Pathologist on-call for permission to issue non-type specific blood. The ER calls and says they need blood NOW. Sally tells the ER Resident she is waiting on a call from the Pathologist. The ER Resident looks for an Attending Physician to ask if he will take responsibility for an incompatible blood transfusion in the event the Pathologist in charge does not call back soon. In the meantime Hannah dies.    Biology Science Physiology PHYSICAL SCI 6825 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
