Your paper must follow instructions for research and citation given in the folder
with that name. All sources must be considered academically acceptable and it is
preferred that they come from peer reviewed journals.

Do not make this more difficult than it is. You are learning about a number of
topics to inform yourself in order to test a hypothesis.
SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
For this assignment you will select ONE of the following thesis statements to test.
Testing a hypothesis in a research paper is the same as for any other type of
assignment. Remember, the key is to test not try to prove a hypothesis.
Select one of the following and copy it exactly as written below into your paper
introduction.
Interventions such as caesarean sections in pregnancy and birth for non-medical
reasons such as profit or convenience is ethical and should continue.

SECTION 2: DOCUMENTARY REVIEW
For this section you must view the documentary Birth Time. To view it you must
attend the free viewing which will take place on Wednesday, May 4 in Yokum 200
at 6 PM on May 4 and it is required that you stay for the colloquy that follows the
viewing of the film. If you do not live in Plattsburgh or close by (10 or more
miles), you must notify the instructor ahead of time to get permission to watch
the documentary online and to get information about doing so.

Subtopic: History and background of medicalization of pregnancy and
birth
Subtopic: Post-partum depression and Post traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD) resulting from the medicalization of pregnancy and birth. This
is a factor for both women and men
Subtopic: Harm caused by non-medically necessary interventions.

Economics of the medicalization of pregnancy and birth:
Subtopic: presentations on profits made by such things as C-sections and
other interventions (drug companies, medical equipment suppliers,
hospitals, doctors, etc.)
Subtopic: Doctors on how and why they feel pressured to participate in
practices they themselves do not support.
SECTION 5: MIDWIFERY, MIDWIVES, DOULAS AND HOME BIRTHS
For this section you must use 2 sources from the bibliography provided by the

Home births and midwives and how medicalization of pregnancy and birth has
taken away choice and forced movement away from natural childbirth. In
addition, medicalization has led to laws making it difficult for midwives to
function or work and in many countries this leaves women with no trained health
worker to assist with pregnancy in birth. For instance, in Liberia, 1 in 12 women
die because midwives are not available to assist and no medical assistance is
available.

Globalization of medicalization of pregnancy and birth as a result of development:
with talks about how development has led to the demise of midwifery in LDCs and
created huge expansion of non-medically necessary interventions such as Csections and led to the lack of healthcare for pregnant women. Presentations
from people in other nations (especially LDCs) who discuss the problems
occurring in their countries.
