After reading about and watching the videos on Advance Directives…
Question Answered step-by-step After reading about and watching the videos on Advance Directives… After reading about and watching the videos on Advance Directives consider the following: Mary Jones, an 85 year-old female admitted to the hospital with newly diagnosed end-stage renal disease, was informed by the endocrinologist that she would have to undergo daily hemodialysis and adhere to a very strict dietary and exercise regimen to remain comfortable and that she would likely need a kidney transplant. Her condition was stated to be incurable. In addition to ESRD, she also suffered from diabetic nephropathy and hypertension. After much discussion with her family, she decided that she did not wish to undergo either hemodialysis or to have a kidney transplant. She also stated that she did not want any kind of heroic measures taken to sustain her life should she become incapacitated. Mary stated that since her nephew Adam Marcus was her durable power of attorney for her financial matters, he would be responsible for informing the doctors of her decision should anything happen to her.Sometime around 1 A.M. Mary slipped into a coma. She was unresponsive to external stimulation. The nurses reviewed the health record for the Advanced Directives acknowledgment form and discovered that Mary did not have this in place, nor did she wish to have any completed at the time of her admission. The physicians decided to intubate her and put her on a ventilator. They also ordered emergency hemodialysis. When her family was contacted, they were adamant that these measures be reversed and or stopped. The family was informed that no Advance Directives were on record, nor was there a DNR order in her record, and that they were unable to discontinue life-sustaining efforts without a court order. Why couldn’t Mary’s nephew, Adam Marcus, be able to step in and take over her healthcare decisions? 2. What would you have done differently to prevent this from happening if Mary was your loved one? 3. What is a DNR order and why would it have been important in this scenario?
