Support Departments (slide 1 of 3)
• A support department provides a necessary
service to produce a product, but is not directly
involved in the production process.
o
For example, Janitorial and Maintenance departments
are necessary for production, but are not directly
involved in production.
• Support departments are sometimes called service
departments because they provide services to
other departments.
• Support departments are normally accounted for as
a cost or responsibility center. All direct costs of the
support department are accumulated in the center.

• When a single plantwide overhead rate is used to
apply overhead to products, support department
costs are simply combined with all other overhead
costs.

The total overhead cost is then applied to the
products using a single cost driver.
• Because a single driver is used for all overhead
costs, it is unlikely that the driver selected is
appropriate for every type of overhead.
