Due to the patient’s history of coronary artery disease for which she had two stents the orthopedic surgeon obtained consult from a cardiologist before going ahead. An internist was also consulted as to the patient’s diabetes prior to surgery.Three days after the hip surgery the advanced practice cardiology nurse practitioner who worked with the cardiologist who did the pre-surgery consult was making her rounds in the hospital. When the nurse practitioner  entered the patient’s room the RN assigned to her care was giving her her medication. The RN was feeding her soft food that contained the crushed pills. The patient began to show signs of aspiration. That is, her affect became flat and she was basically unresponsive. The family who were in the room first noticed it and alerted the nurse practitioner. The nurse practitioner listened to her lungs and saw that her 02 saturation was low and told the RN to titrate her oxygen.
