My grandmother suffered from postpartum depression which was undiagnosed at the time. She used drugs to cope and in turn became abusive toward the children. Situations like these screamed for a dire need for social work and services. In addition my grandmother was abandoned at birth by her mother as a product of rape and dealt with unresolved trauma from this throughout her life. My father born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Born to a poor farming family. My father had to flee Honduras as a teen on his own after is brother was murdered in gang violence. A young man of 15 years old with an elementary school education migrated to Jersey City, New Jersey. With no one to receive him and being too young to go to school. My father experienced homelessness for a period of time. Another situation that calls for social work and social services. Education, housing, and aid should have been available to this youth. My father landed work at a factory for a less than livable wage and has never exceeded beyond this role. He met my mother working at that factory, she was already a single mother of two at the time. He helped, as best as he could with his own limitations to raise and provide for her children as if they were his own. My mother also struggled with addictions her entire adult life and it lead to a lot of unfortunate situations. My parents divorced and my mother was left to provide for her three children alone. We moved around a lot, experienced homelessness and suffered mentally and emotionally. Despite being on some government programs - those means did not adequately suffice to keep us fed and stable. These experiences have lead me to want to a career in social work and hope to be able to make impactful change and recognize the flaws I saw in the system as a child that has lived through it.
