In-Class Policy Debates
It is time to show off what you have learned so far in the form of class policy debates!
Set-up: Students will choose a partner to be your teammate for the debate. I will
randomly assign two teams the same debate topic regarding an aspect of crime policy
who will then debate each other in class. The twist is that on the day of debates each
group will randomly draw the side of the issue they should argue. Thus, it is imperative
that each group prepare to argue both sides. This will ensure that you research the
strong points on both sides and are able to defend your position and question the other
side’s arguments effectively.
You should approach the debate as if you are trying to convince the class to vote for
your side of the argument. For each debate group, teams will have 10-15 minutes to
battle it out. You should thoroughly research both view-points of your topic. I suggest
that you come prepared with notes and cited resources to support your arguments.
At the end of each debate, I will open it up to the class to ask questions of either side.
Grading: I will be grading each team member individually. Grading will be on how well
you researched the topic and were able to provide relevant facts to support your
arguments, how well you contributed what you learned in class to the debate, how well
you responded to the other sides arguments and questions from the class, and how
much you contributed to the debate (this means you both need to be able and willing to
speak out on your points and not just one teammate doing all the talking).
Also, each student in the class will fill out a voting sheet for all the debates except their
own to vote for who they perceived to be the winner of the debate. This does not mean
they will be voting for whose side they agree with, but strictly on which team they
thought had better arguments, come-backs, clarity, and presence. I will take the class
votes into consideration for your grade as well.
Topics List: Below are some potential debate topics. Feel free to send me topic ideas if
