You are a manager for Big City Financial. You manage a team of 10… You are a manager for Big City Financial. You manage a team of 10 employees. Your boss wants you to select one of your employees for a new position the company is creating leading a new department. You are instructed to select only one person from your group for this promotion. Four of your employees are interested and apply for the position. Their backgrounds are as follows:Ali – He would like the job but knows he is still pretty junior and probably won’t get it, but wants to apply to at least get his name out there.Amanda – She has lots of great experience and is very competent. She knows she is qualified but she also knows the competition is tough and that at least two of the others applying would also do the job well, and one of the other applicants is probably even a little more qualified than she is. Bob – He is experienced and competent. Even though in reality he is slightly less qualified than one or two of the others, he thinks he is the best person for the job and he doesn’t think anyone else is even remotely close to him. He wants this promotion badly and is very confident he will get it.Abeni – She is the most experienced of the group. She is highly competent and has ranked first in performance ratings in the group for five of the past seven years and second the other two years. She is a team player who will always go along with what is best for the group, but also shows strong leadership skills. Not surprisingly you decide to promote Abeni. Based on this decision, and the information provided above, describe what you think will be the most likely impact on the job satisfaction of each of the other three applicants who don’t get the job. Also, what might their potential next actions be based on what you learned about attitudes and behaviours in class. For your answer, you should discuss the most likely reaction and impact on the job satisfaction of each of the three applicants who do not get the promotion separately (i.e., how will Ali react, how will Amanda react, how will Bob react). Be sure to explain your logic using the discrepancy model of job satisfaction detailed in class. Finally, how would you explain the decision to the applicants who don’t get the job so that each can hopefully see it as fairer and lessen the potential negative reactions they might have.
