Rather, many of you felt that you get to decide. In some ways, this is very much in contradiction to Haefeli’s argument. Do you feel “disempowered” by stories of geniuses? Whether you do or not, do you derive pleasure from learning about geniuses and their “masterpieces”? (I’m not referring to this class in particular, but rather the idea of studying “great people” and things they’ve done.)Is there a value in looking back at contemporaries of the historical geniuses and examining their work or is there greater value in looking for underrepresented composers?Is there a distinction between people labeled as “genius” by contemporaries and people labeled as “genius” much later on?Finally, after having spent a semester thinking about classical music, what might the purpose be for classical music to foster an atmosphere of exclusivity and reverence surrounding its music and its geniuses?
