Discuss at least two organizational barriers that could exist in implementing cultural competency initiatives   Hello Everyone!! As defined in chapter 7, cultural competence is the ability to understand different cultures and perspectives in all aspects of care. One must learn to understand the different diverse cultures in the world and how they perceive healthcare, to create better health and social outcomes. I work for AHF, which stands for AIDS Healthcare Foundation. This specialty clinic and pharmacy treats patients that have and/or are exposed to HIV/AIDS. Explicit biases or attitudes are thoughts and feeling that people deliberately think about and can make conscious reports about (Hall et al., 2015).  A good example of explicit biases that we as a healthcare team have experienced is with our older African American patients. Due to the Tuskegee Experiment of 1932-1972, older patients of this generation are not very trusting of their healthcare team, and openly express how healthcare workers treat black patients as “test-dummies”. This causes patients to become non-adherent on their medications, which can lead to opportunistic infections and even death. Implicit or unconscious biases are thoughts and feelings that exist outside of our conscious awareness and consequently are difficult to acknowledge and control consciously (Hall et al., 2015).  Nurses and doctors may treat certain patients different kinds of ways without even knowing that they’re doing that to them. We as a company are fighting for the right to treat all our patients equal. A good example of implicit biases is calling some of our transgendered patients by their non-preferred name and gender. Although most of us are reading charts, we must understand and document what they prefer to be called and learn the correct pronouns to address them by. This helps with compliance, and it helps our patients feel more comfortable with entering our clinics for treatment!  References:Baack, D., Fischer, A., & Vellek, S. A.
