EXAMPLE : – Driving Imagery: The poet attempts to express attachment to the poem subject’s experience of driving in the cold by describing the country as per what he or she feels the country evoked, and what similarities emerged. The poet uses this imagery to animate the landscape that is witnessed in the country driving on a cold night. This is portrayed by “you become the country”. The poet then proceeds to make the subject embody the characteristics of the cold and being alone. This is what the poet at the end repeats in the last stanza, wrapping in the appearance of the snowy cold moonlit country with the empty state of mind and cold sensations of the subject as a driver. By doing this, the poet ironically acknowledges the sensory appeals the cold night had on the subject, so much so that it became important for the subject to indicate that in a letter. Language use: The language used in this poem is meant to make the subject forget about the bad experience by making it seem like a good thing. The poet didn’t care about how the person drove. What mattered to him was that the person became one with the country.” In this way, ironic negation is used as a way to reduce the pain of driving through the cold in a cold car by comparing the subject to nature as though they are the same or have the same effects of cold distance and being alone. Main idea/theme: The main theme of this poem is embodying the environment of an experience as a means to get by the negative parts of it. This is very important to how the poet talks about the beauty of the country when they are alone and not in the city. They talk about the moonlight, the trees, the tangled bushes, the pines, and a lone driver passing through the country. – The Weather Imagery: The poet begins with vivid imagery of the weather as some kind of moisture or liquid that is preventing his/her words from staying dry. The poet also mentions “wrinkled humor” caused by the weather. There is mention of people mimicking in life like how trees and their branches lean on each other when the wind, an element of weather, sways a certain way. The writer also depicts the weather as something that will die, that is beautiful and loved. These statements emphasize the poet’s enjoyment of the weather. Language use: The language used by the poet is that of an intoxicated lover of the weather and how it changes his or her psyche. The poet mentions sacrifice for this weather and love for the weather, adding that the weather is beautiful and moves him or her into writing. The poet uses simile (beautiful dead to be, that is, life and therefore the weather is like life) to present his or her hyperbolic fading/fainting just over the weather. Main idea/theme: The main theme of this poem is the weather, and its fast effect on the human state of mind, and its expression of it. The weather seems to make the poet happy, getting into his or her words. – Solitaire Imagery: The poem uses the imagery of how the subject is moving by making the forest, the road, the small meadow, the stiff green grass, the plank shack, its rat inhabitants, and the river an active part of this nightmare. It appears that the poet aims to increase the shock and creep value of what the subject experiences in this dream world as a disturbing part of his sleep. The poet also draws up the idea that this dream reoccurs severally, adding at the end how an engine came and took him back again. This imagery emotes the sense of vertigo (the sensation that you, or the environment around you, is moving or spinning. ) and being stuck in a given issue through the dream. It also enhances portraying the many little pieces of this dream as a continuous merged progression. Notice how the poet jumps from the rat-inhabited plank shack to the shallow rocky river, then quickly joins this to “the north of nowhere”, then brings us back into the rats and the water and wet chocolate bars and cigarettes. In the normal world, this would be very hard to piece together as a logical set of events. Language use: Language used in this poem is that of continuous motion. The language is highly descriptive as a means of drawing in the audience to experience through the subject this wildly repeating disturbance. This has been achieved by a personification of such items as the road which slides beneath his feet. Main idea/ theme: The main idea coming across from this poem is that this is an endless nightmare cycle. The poem has a looped motion effect.
