Question You are one of the educators working with a group of 25 kinder aged… You are one of the educators working with a group of 25 kinder aged children at Safe Haven Early Learning Centre.  At Safe Haven, there is a very strong focus on inclusion and including children’s voices in the program. Meet Bob. Bob is now five (5) years old. He just started going to Safe Haven. You get to know Bob’s interests and goals, and you along with your peers help create an environment that is welcoming for Bob in his transition to a new kinder. You do this by creating experiences and activities that stem from Bob’s interests and likes. Bob settles into the new environment easily in a matter of two weeks.  It has been three (3) months and you have observed Bob to demonstrate behaviours of concern including hyperactivity and aggressive and oppositional behaviour. The main areas of concern with Bob’s behaviour are: ? Biting ? Head butting ? Throwing ? Climbing Throughout the three (3) months since Bob has started, there have been a number of behaviours that have been a cause for concern and have resulted in injuries to staff. In addition to those above, these have included: ? Head banging ? Dropping to the floor ? Making his body rigid and not moving ? Pinching ? Scratching Some of the triggers for these behaviours have been identified as: ? Seeking adult attention and time? Determination to get something he wants – any toy or distraction in the room ? Overstimulation/overexcitement ? New people ? New situations ? Things happening out of routine ? Loud noises Physically Bob is very strong and is very determined; when he sees something he wants he will persistently go for it, though he can be easily distracted.  Bob has limited communication skills, using one word utterances and pictures and symbols, which are strongest in his areas of interest, e.g. words like ‘ball’, ‘blue’, ‘bus’, ‘home’, etc. He enjoys using his range of vocabulary with staff when prompted and can easily be distracted when his attention is directed early enough. You want what’s best for Bob and believe that he will benefit greatly from early intervention, however this discussion has not yet been had with Bob’s parents. Many of the educators in your room are new to the industry and are anxious about bringing this up with his parents. Family background: Bob lives with his parents and two younger sisters. His older brother was taken away and placed in foster care before Bob was born.  Health records/issues: There is a history of drug abuse in Bob’s family. Bob has not seen a maternal health nurse since he was 1 years old.
