Question Identify and discuss four distinct geological… Identify and discuss four distinct geological materials/principles/processes, that are significant or important to our everyday life on Earth. For each identified geological material/principle/process, describe the geologic process, material, or event, and then explain how it is important or significant in everyday life. (Note: significances are not necessarily positive). FOUR different examples are provided below: (DO NOT REPEAT THE EXAMPLES AS YOUR ANSWER) Example 1 – Volcanic Eruption. Geology Process: Volcanic eruption is the outpouring of molten rocks to the surface of the earth. These molten materials rapidly cooldown on the Earth’s surface and solidify to become volcanic rocks./ Importance: The solidified molten rocks form new land on which we live. Examples include the State of Hawaii which is a volcanic eruption in the past providing place for everybody in Hawaii to live today.Example 2 – Pangaea Break-Up. Geology Event: This is when the last supercontinent on Earth broke up into all the different continents, we have on earth today. This break-up started about 200 million years ago and resulted from the divergent movement of plates, and the formation of oceans on Earth./ Significance: The break-up of Pangaea explained why all the different continents on earth are separated by oceans and why we can find rocks in different continents with similar ages and orientations. The break-up of Pangaea also helped explained the principle of plate tectonics by the various evidence left behind.Example 3 – Mass Movement. Geology Process: This is the bulk movement of soils and rocks downslope under the pull of gravity. It can be influenced by slope steepness, water content, and geology materials. Examples include mudflow, soil creeps, and decries slide./ Significance: Mass movement can cause lots of destruction leading to the loss of lives and properties. This type of movement can destroy roads, and bridges and hamper the everyday activities of humans in an area. For example, a mudslide in Canada on November 16, 2021, killed a woman and destroyed roads.Example 4 – Coal. Geology Materials: This is an organic sedimentary rock that is formed from the rapid accumulation and burials of vegetation. Time and pressure of burials convert the buried materials to coal, which can range from low-grade Peat to high-grade Anthracite./ Importance: Coal is used for generating power that can be used to heat homes.
