Our readings this week discuss the organization of… Our readings this week discuss the organization of interprofessional health care teams, as well as the way various types of team organization can impact the dynamics and the outcomes of the work.Drawing on your experience working in teams (ideally in a work setting, but perhaps in a sport setting, classwork or even in social settings…) identify two points from our readings that you thought aptly described your experience of teamwork, and one point that didn’t quite resonate with you. I have a lot of experience working in teams at my job in retail where I am a shift leader and on the management team. During my shifts, I usually close the store with 2 or 3 other sales associates where we clean the store, complete stock, process transactions and do closing paperwork. On ordinary days, I am in charge of assigning roles or sections to each worker and making sure all tasks are done efficiently and properly. I take my own roles and tasks from the manager and when she is not available is when I am the manager on duty where I oversee the store and its occupants. One of the points in the reading that resonated with me was the team structure concept. To have a team run smoothly and efficiently, it needs to have an organized and clear structure (Heinemann & Zeiss, 2002). At my work, we have a 5-minute meeting at the beginning of everyone’s shift that includes their start and end times, any breaks they have, any paperwork that they need to sign, and their roles at the store (cashier, stock, floor aide etc.) and any other tasks they have been assigned throughout the day. Their roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, and all the standards and procedures are well developed and understood (Heinemann & Zeiss, 2002).Another point that resonates with me at my place of work is interdependence. We work with the other employees to effectively utilize all resources and skills by communicating and understanding their strengths and areas that need improvement (Heinemann & Zeiss, 2002). While we do have our own sections or roles, we share the workload of the whole store to accomplish the overall tasks and ensure that opening the next day will be easy (Heinemann & Zeiss, 2002). We are unable to leave the store without all tasks completed so if someone finishes their roles early, they can help others or take over someone else’s task if they are running a bit slower. We all work interdependently throughout the whole day and with the shift workers from the day before or the next day (Heinemann & Zeiss, 2002).A point that does not resonate with me and my work is overlapping roles. When this happens, there can be conflict, duplicating, unclear boundaries, and some tasks forgotten (Tsukuda, 1990 as cited in VanWiechen, 2022). This does not occur at my work as we are a fairly small team who communicates to understand each other’s strengths and areas that need improvement to ensure everyone is being assigned suitable roles and tasks and given the opportunities to grow in areas that they are not used to. We define expectations and assign roles to the appropriate and compatible team members to ensure that roles don’t overlap (Tsukuda, 1990 as cited in Van Wiechen, 2022).These are the points that aptly described my teamwork experience at work and one point that did not resonate with me or my experiences. ReferencesHeinemann, G.
