Two students were absent. Tony Eden was absent for the second consecutive day. As the classroom door opened. Gary Clark, the principle, motion for Ms. Allison to come into the hallway. The news that he had for Ms. Alison was disturbing. The Sheriff’s Department had called the school to advise them that Tony, upon waking up, had found the lifeless body of his 28-year-old mother, Terry Eden, and 31-year-old father, Alan Eden, on the floor. After unsuccessfully trying to wake them, he called his grandparents, Tom, and Mary Eden, who rushed over. They in turn called the 911 dispatcher who sent an emergency response team and a sheriff’s deputy.  Finding fentanyl near the couple, the emergency response team determined that both Terry and Alan Eden were dead, presumably from an opioid overdose. They were among the nearly 48,000 opioid related deaths that year in the United States and more than 4200 in their home state of Ohio ( NIH, 2019: NIH, 2019c). Opioid-related deaths are at an epidemic stage in the United States and communities are struggling to provide the services needed to eliminate the deaths and care for the survivors.  Tom and Mary had moved from West Virginia to Ohio 20 years earlier because of the work opportunities and the steel mill near their community. Tom had made a good living there and his son Alan had followed in his father’s footsteps joining the workforce at the mill. All went well for both Eden families until the mill abruptly closed two years ago. It was not long before Alan and Terri had gone through his severance pay from the mill and the unemployment checks were inadequate to maintain the lifestyle they had enjoyed. Terri took a job as a waitress, while Alan looked hopelessly for a decent paying job. He became frustrated and depressed. Friends got them started on opioids, and both were soon addicted. They used much of Terri’s earnings at the diner to support their habit. They soon began to neglect their parental responsibilities to Tony and his four-year-old sister, Ellen.  These were not the first opioid related family deaths at the school.
