Cognitive capabilities can be assessed through intelligence assessment, which can help the counsellor in the counselling process. There are several theories of intelligence that can help a counsellor in understanding intelligence, and which can provide a base for individual and group intelligence testing. Other assessments that counsellors must be aware of include knowledge of achievement and aptitude assessment. Aptitude assessment gathers data regarding a client’s ability to learn a skill or knowledge, while achievement assessment measures the learning of content already learned. Both of these assessments can be critical components of career counselling.
