Question Answered step-by-step Any comment? need help. Thank you. There once was a girl who just… Any comment? need help. Thank you. There once was a girl who just wanted to have a normal life, ok yes, that’s me. Sometimes I speak in third person to sound sophisticated, but I’m really not. Living a life of abnormalcy became my normal, which therefore became mundane and…well, lonely in my point of view of the story. Yes, I sound dramatic and I am. Hold on, did you know there’s a television show called “When Animals Attack”, well they should make a show called “When Plants Attack”- I swear whenever I see a plant and try to dodge it I fail! It still ends up hitting me! Honestly, if I were to make my life a television show, it would be called “When Life Attacks”…I got off track again didn’t I? I tend to do that, sorry. My point is, my life in all its abnormal glory needs change and let me tell you when people say be careful what you pray and wish for, they are 100% right! You’re probably confused, let me show you what I mean, and we’ll switch over to third person narrative for real this time!* For once there was down time in Susan’s busy day at work. She stared at her phone at 6:53pm, “window shopping” her dating app lounging on the couch in her living room of her one bedroom apartment, eclectically decorated. To her surprise her phone made a “ping” sound making her eyes widen and her jaw to drop. She screams excitedly, “Yes! What!? Who’s no longer a loser!?” She looks up at her TV screen at her reflection and goofily sings to herself, “Me, oh yeah…”She shimmies her body dancing in joy and realizes the time on her phone. In a panic to attempt to avoid her usual tardiness she goes to her room and gets ready for a dinner date with her sister. After about ten minutes or so she heads to the diner nearby called, “Sit, Eat, Relax” going down many flights of stairs and waving to her door man. Being a city girl she naturally walks over passing various stores on her way. She enters the diner waving at her sister who already grabbed a table.”Hey! On time, are you impressed?” Susan says lively.Emily just smiles uninterested, “Hey, sit down, soooo did anyone catch your eye yet?””Not like in the movies. You know how the eye flies out like wee…and then some bad guy catches it in his hands and smashes it…but that’s never happened to me…well I hope not that would be scary and you would probably notice because I would have an eye patch…I seriously watch too many movies. How much time do I have on my hands-” Susan rambles.”Susan, I’m serious, answer my question!” Emily looks at her expectantly.”Oh, I’m trying this online dating thing, which I totally thought in the beginning was for lame and pathetic people trying to find their long lost twin that they’re really not related to, on like dogloverslookingforalover.com or peoplewhoneedtomeet.net or whatever, but I tried one, and it’s not for any that, at all. Then I thought, eh, what could happen maybe I could actually find someone in this very cruel world,” Susan replies”Any hits?” Emily leans on the table staring at her, “You never answered my question, you…expanded it.””I did, didn’t I,” she smiles to herself, “Well, I met an Asian guy. Nice, smart, and he likes Jell-O. My kind of guy. Am I pathetic?”Emily gasps dramatically, “Well hey that’s great news!””So I am pathetic? Thanks, just checking. Check please!” Susan’s sarcasm streams anxiety through her veins.A waitress walks over, “You didn’t order anything yet. Did you want to?”Susan’s eyes widened, “…That is very true. Thank you.””No! I’m leaving, thanks though. Susan, have a wonderful meal by yourself. The usual, right? Kisses!” Emily obnoxiously waves as she exits the diner.A moment passes and Susan speaks to the waitress, “I’ll have a chocolate milkshake to go please.” The waitress just nods to Susan awkwardly and walks away. After about five minutes of sulking and waiting Susan then receives the shake and walks back home. Forcing herself to have no emotional reaction to the “normal” experience she had with her sister she sips her milkshake, places it in the refrigerator and immediately falls asleep on her couch without changing. Waking up the next day, she groans as she goes to the refrigerator and sips her milkshake from the night before. She takes a look in the mirror in her bedroom and shrugs seeing that her makeup looks fine and her outfit is a stylish pantsuit. Grabbing her work bag she heads out of the door and takes an unnecessary short drive to work across the street. She walks into the building and goes in the elevator still sipping her milkshake. She enters her office and just as she is about to sit down at her desk her boss calls her in via her phone speaker as she is mid way to sitting down. Her boss’ voice through the speaker, “Susan, I need you in my office!”Mid sit, she stands up straight, setting down her milkshake and walks out of the front door, into the boss’s office that is located right next to hers.”Boss? You rang?” Susan says professionally. Her boss speaks in his signature unique serious and casual tone all at once, “Susan, how many times do I have to say this? Call me Tyler and why don’t you ever use the connecting door?”Susan’s face strunches awkwardly, “Well, Boss Tyler, I don’t use the connecting door because it’s weird and it makes me feel connected to you in a strange way.””Call me Tyler. Walk with me Sus…” Tyler says.”Sus?” Susan replies.”That was an attempt at a nickname,” he says with a defensive tone.”Really?” sarcasm oozing out of her, “You thought, oh her name is Susan, what’s the best possible nickname? Sus. That sounds identifiably not offensive. Sounds like Dr. Seuss the author of children’s books.””He was very good at rhyming,” he says calmly.”…That is true,” she says, trying to make herself accept the nickname. They walk toward the balcony of the building looking down below to the parking lot through a very large rounded glass wall.”Ah!-” Tyler shouts stoically.”Ah!” she startledly ducks and happens to get back up just in time for Tyler to look back at her. She leans on the railing trying to hide the fact she just stood back up.”I remember what I was going to tell you,” Tyler says, ignoring her awkwardness. Her eyes were wide, looking at him intently as her voice jumps octaves, “Yes! Do tell me, I want to hear.””Now, this may be hard to believe but I’m fairly wealthy,” he says in a bragging voice.”-Fairy?” she replies squinting her eyes to hear him better.”-Fairly,” he says, staring right back at her in his usual emotionless face.”-Fairy-Fairly, I can hear you, ahem,” she says, trying to keep the conversation going without laughing.Tyler then pulls Susan on her arm to the other side of the balcony.Tyler changes the subject looking out the window, “I see you took my advice and used your parking space.””You know I said someone else can have my parking space,” she says, a bit nervous.”Oh I know but you deserve it,” he looks her in the eye again.”I live across the street. Not really necessary…” she says, noticing a man walking towards them with slick hair and wearing a navy blue suit. Her gut tells her something is wrong.”Ah, James I’m so glad you made it today. Let’s go to the conference room,” Tyler says to the man.”Yes, let’s,” the man responds to Tyler.”Ok, so you guys go do that I’ll be here,” Tyler grabs her arm and her voice jumps an octave again, “Oh ok, so I’m coming with then, that’s perfect, fantastic, of course, why wouldn’t I be part of this conference?”They all quickly walk into the conference room. Tyler lets go of her arm and calmly gestures to Susan to sit down at the table as James pulls some files from a suitcase conveniently placed on the table.”Susan, what did you dream about being when you were a child?” Tyler asks her as he adjusts his red tie.”What?” She asks, her brain going blank.”Answer the question,” the man says sternly, making her jump as he closes the blinds in the conference room.”I-I wanted to be a lawyer, so I can change someone’s life because I can’t change mine,” she replies, catching her breath.”And you ended up here,” Tyler says as he adjusts his sleeves.”Like your sad dreams Ms. Susan, your life is about to change,” the man says to her.”I’m sorry what? Boss Tyler?” Susan looks at Tyler with pleading eyes.”Don’t call me that!” Tyler snaps pulling out a gun from his back and slams it on the conference table. The man looks at him, “Not now Tyler! And thanks for helping me with the blinds!” he says sarcastically as he finishes closing them.”Shut up! This is serious business!” he runs his hands over his face to calm himself, “…My name is Tyler I work for the FBI and this is my partner James Kim.””I can introduce myself, thank you. And we don’t really work for the FBI,” James says snarkily at Tyler.”But he just said-” she tries to comprehend.Tyler gets in Susan’s face clearly looking stressed, “I know what I said!…look…this is a very difficult situation and we don’t have a great way to explain it to you in such little time. Just think of us as special agents like the FBI, ok?”Susan’s eyes reflect her scaredness as she replies, “um-yeah-sure-whatever-sounds good-“Tyler’s eyes swivel looking her in her eyes intensely and sighs removing his face from hers.”Great, can we please move on?” James says, already done with Tyler’s behavior. He sighs again, “Yes, I’m Tyler Sullivan. We are special agents and we need your help. You are the only one who can help us.””Me? Why me? Are there no more pathetic and lonely people? Am I the only one left? Me and that one Asian guy on that dating website?-” she replies with a strain in her voice.”So she does know him,” James looks at her puzzled.”Him? Him Who?” she asks.Tyler slides her files of the only information they have on this person on the table, “Johnny Lee aka the missing assassin criminal we’ve been trying to find over the years.”James continues, “No one has been successful in catching him. He has been living in disguise under the name Johnny Lee and that’s all we know for now.””Johnny Lee? That’s an assassin’s name?” she says unimpressed.”His strategy is to blend in with the common people so he looks just like the rest of us and still maintain his job and lifestyle. But, no, we do not believe that is his real name,” Tyler responds.”Among people like us, he is known as ‘The Eliminator’,” James adds. She breathes out through her lips, “That does seem scarier. So, what do you want?””Check your dating app,” Tyler says, rubbing his temples. She does so and gasps, “Johnny Lee! No! I was going to go on a date with an assassin?! What the-“”-Oh you’re going to that date. Only we are going to supervise-” Tyler cuts her off.James then cuts off Tyler, “-Supervise?” he looks at Tyler in confusion, then looks at Susan with a serious face, “We’ll be undercover at the same place he tells you to go meet him. You won’t see us but you’ll be able to hear us with a mic set. Don’t worry we won’t let him hurt you.”Tyler frustratedly looks at James, “I was going to explain that, but you cut me off.”James rolls his eyes, “Yes well you were going to confuse her,” he mumbles to himself, “Yeah right…”She gulps hard, “What if I don’t agree with this decision?James turns to her and gets very intense, “Of course you will agree because if you don’t, you will die and it may not be by us…No one will care if you die. You have no boyfriend, you have no real friends, your sister thinks you’re inferior to her, and the rest of your family thinks you’re a failure. You’re completely alone. Why should anyone care if you die? That’s why you’re going. You’re going to make your life purposeful and save lives including your own. That’s why you are going.”For the first time Tyler looks at her compassionately, “Don’t worry we’ll protect you and if he comes anywhere close to hurting you. We’ll jump in to save you and we’ll change your identity so no one will ever know what’s going on. Until then, we will be monitoring your electronics and you. We will be communicating with you through your electronics. Which is obvious. We will be watching you and keep updated on your date with Johnny Lee. Remember, no matter what is happening do not be casual about any of this. Don’t be sloppy…But after this conversation, this never happened. So, when we exit this room, call me Tyler. I am your boss and nothing else, understood?””As for me, I am no one. We never met. Understood?” James adds.Susan stares into space in shock, “…yes…I have never seen your face…” she looks at James and then to Tyler, “…and you are my boss…Tyler…”As if nothing happened, Tyler smiles, “Perfect. Let’s tidy up now shall we? Come Susan. We have work to do.” He walks toward the door guiding her out.”What the hell? You’re not going to help?” James says to Tyler.Tyler turns around, “No. I’m the boss here, remember,” he turns to leave, “Come Susan we must clean you up. You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”She looks at him with a pale face, “No kidding.” She nervously walks out with Tyler.James is still in the room and shakes his head, “Typical.” He turns around starting to cleans up the space and opens up the blinds.Tyler and Susan walk to the Boss’s personal bathroom in his office trying to look “normal” on their way back from the conference room.Tyler points to the sink, “Clean your face.””Why?” she looks at him puzzled.”Why?” he asks back to her.”Why?” she asks again.”You look overwhelmed. Should I have you order yourself a facial? A deep massage?” he says threatening her.She interrupts him, “-No! I will wash my face here.” She turns on the water at the sink. The hot water steams up the mirror. She soaps her hands and rubs the sudsy foam into her skin. She looks in the mirror seeing herself looking like a soapy snowman. Her heart starts to pound as what just happened starts to process in her brain. To calm her heart she splashes her face with the hot water cleansing herself of the stress of the situation by probably 1%.While she cleans her face Tyler speaks, “I like things clean. Don’t be sloppy. You are a hard worker. I know you will do nothing but your best,” he pauses and looks at her splashing her face, “That’s enough,” he hands her a small towel. She takes it obediently, “Thank you…” She pats her face dry.Tyler then points to the door without saying a word. She notices and walks out the door, behind her he follows into his office.”You may return to work now,” he walks to his desk arranging things, “Everything seems to be in order,” he straightens a crooked pen on his desk as she turns to him like an obedient child, “And please, use the connecting door.”She looks at him, “Yes sir.” She stares at him for further instruction. He notices she’s still in his office and speaks forcefully, “Leave.”She flinches at the urgency of his voice, “Right away.” Stiffly she walks to the connecting door.He painfully watches her and sighs, “You know what, just go home. You look ill. This is painful to watch.”Midwalk she turns to him, “Pardon?”Intensely he says, “Leave…You. Look. Ill.”Her eyes show her realization of his words, she replies, “…yes…Tyler…” Then makes her physically and mentally awkward exit.*After an eventful day at work, needless to say, Susan walks in her apartment building climbing various stairs, because a neighbor possibly closed the elevator door on her on purpose. As if her day wasn’t already horrifying, though a rude neighbor is nothing compared to her boss and his partner interrogated her in a conference room at the beginning of her shift. She goes to get some snacks and watches TV unconsciously flipping through the channels trying to relieve some stress. Suddenly a man’s handsome face appeared on her TV screen, “Miss me?”She screams, “Wha?!” Her snacks fly to the other side of the couch as she leaps over it in one fluid motion. James from the interrogation meeting earlier that day laughs, “Hey, I didn’t jump like that when I saw your face.””What are you doing on my screen?!” she yells out of breath.”I’m ‘supervising’. Remember?” He moved his fingers making quotation marks.”You told me to forget your face!” she says.He smirks, “When you are out in public. At home you can daydream about me all you want.”She rolls her eyes, “What do you want?””I want to make sure you don’t blab your mouth tomorrow or later tonight on your phone,” he says.”Tomorrow?” she asks.”You have a family dinner scheduled at your mother’s house at 7pm sharp,” he says professionally.”What?! Oh I forgot…” she scratches her head.James smiles as he brushes his hand through his hair, “Yes, I know, I’m like a beautiful calendar.””…How did you know that?” she looks at him puzzled.”It’s on your calendar on your phone. But your phone is on silent so you wouldn’t have known unless I told you. So, you’re welcome,” he says and smiles. Her eyes looking down as she thinks, “Thank you…””Well that’s all. Just checking in. Unless you’d like me to stay?” he flirtingly laughs, “I’m kidding. Goodbye.”The screen turns back to the original channel it was on just as she looks up to it, “Bye…” She calmly walks around her couch and sits back down and sighs. She grabs her honey and butter chips and crunches on them nervously. “It’s never the pretty ones that gotta deal with something this crazy. Had to be me…” she says out loud to herself.*Somehow she managed to fall asleep and the following morning she is still on the couch with her snacks and a blanket sprawled out on her back. The smell of food wakes her up, “Hmmm,” her vision blurry as she yawns, “Huh? What?”Her boss Tyler is in an apron approaching her face making her vision clear up. She screams in shock. He speaks to her like he knows what she is about to say, “Didn’t expect me to show up did you? You want to know the reason why I’m here? Well, you’re late for work. So I took the liberty to unlock your door with a paperclip and cook you breakfast to speed up the process. Will the rest of the staff be worried I’m not there? Don’t worry, I already sent them an email including you so it won’t seem suspicious that you aren’t on the list of a perfectly good reason to be an hour late. Like I’m stuck in traffic coming in from New York where I had a conference meeting and I took you with me because you’re my assistant and someone had to write everything down. Here’s your notes and don’t forget them. Excuse me, I need to check the food.” He casually walks away to the kitchen leaving her in shock, “…wait you broke into my apartment while I was sleeping?!”He yells from the kitchen, “Super agent stuff, don’t worry I didn’t steal or break anything,” he says to himself, “not that there’s anything worth stealing here,” He stares at a ceramic chicken on the kitchen counter, “No offense.”She jumps up and speed walks into the kitchen, “Do you realize how creepy that is?”He starts putting food on plates, “You have crumbs on your shirt and now you’ll have to sweep the floor.”Angrily she swipes the crumbs off her shirt onto the floor, “Happy?” She walks away to her room to get dressed. He grunts and starts sweeping, “No, please, let me.”After a quick breakfast that involved snickering and stolen flirty glances, they enter the back of a black Suburban on the way to work. He asks, “Do you have your notes?”She groans, “Yes,” a buzz sound from her phone, “Oh my goodness. It’s a message from ‘you know who’.””Would you feel better if we called him ‘Voldemort’?” he says sarcastically.”No, it’s just that I thought we weren’t supposed to talk about these things in public, ” she points to the driver.”This isn’t in public he’s with me,” he says, “This is Ji-San, our official professional Driver and also James’ younger brother.””This is correct, Miss,” Ji-San responds politely, smiling.”You know you really should try to follow your own rules,” she says to Tyler. He scoffs, “Nevermind that! What did he say?”She reads the message from her phone, “Hello, my name is Johnny Lee! Looks like we are matched! How about dinner? This Friday at 7pm? Meet me at Happy Friday on Langston Street. Is it a date?? :)””I know exactly where that is. Reply ‘yes’,” he says confidently.”No! I am not a robot. I will reply how I see fit,” she starts typing. His eyes widened, “I’m glad you are dedicated to this mission,” He takes her notes from her lap, “Do you have your notes?””Of course I do, they are right-,” she gasps, “Here…where?!””Looking for this?” he smirks. She grunts at him, “What the hell Tyler?! What kind of games are you playing here?””I’m training you. You need to learn to look beyond what’s in front of you. If you’re going on this date with Johnny Lee you need to pay attention,” he states. She rambles, “Oh yeah, cause he’s gonna pull a gun on me on the first date. That’s romantic.””Well, this isn’t a regular date, remember,” he says. She dramatically groans, “How could I forget…where did you put the notebook now?!”He looks at her feet, “You have to be more aware of your surroundings. Besides, I didn’t do it this time. You did.””Whatever,” she crosses her arms. Arts & Humanities Writing Creative Writing ENGLISH 1A Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
