The purpose of this assignment is to analyze appropriate passages from one of the plays we are reading (or
several of the Sonnets) in light of recent critical debates. Suggested topics are as follows:
Relationships between witchcraft and stagecraft.
Relationships between motherhood and murder.
Relationships between self-love and self-destruction.
This is not a research paper—I will provide a selection of (relatively) recent criticsm on each of these topics.
You are also welcome to search for more, but I’d strongly suggest clearing your bibliography with me by
email if you wish to do so. Aim for 7-8 pages in total—more if you have a lot of long quotations.
Citation: include a Works Cited list featuring both the criticism you are responding to and the edition of the
play you are using. Cite criticism by author name and page number within the body; cite the play by act,
scene, and line number (not by page number). When quoting from the play, make sure to quote verse as
verse: that is, if it is formatted in the play in lines that don’t go all the way across the page, with a capital
letter at the beginning of each line, it is verse and you should quote it the same way. Do not center
quotations: left-justify them and indent them (or use the MS Word blockquote feature
