• The point of this exercise is to get students to provide an adequate, yet concise, account of how two
thinkers converge and/or diverge on a key concept within the liberal tradition. The assignment must also
convey a concise understanding of how this key concept ties into the wider political doctrines of these
respective thinkers.
The question to answer is:
Both Locke and Spinoza defend toleration of religious beliefs. But are their theories of toleration animated
by the same political concerns?
I will provide a PDF of all the necessary sources. They include both Spinoza and Lockes work, as well as a
copy of the handout given in class. The writer does not have to include outside sources, the PDFs I will
provide are adequate, but must ALL be used.
