How might that differ depending on the type or size of the organization?There are five major roles or phases to consider in emergency management, these five roles or phases include prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. These five phases were designed to assist in the coordination of disaster and emergency preparation activities that help to eliminate or reduce the impact on communities or organizations may face both internally and externally. Each phase has a specific responsibility that attributes to an organization's ability to become proactive in its emergency management process. Prevention is the actions taken by the organization to avoid or stop an incident from occurring. Mitigation is like prevention as it refers to measures taken to prevent or reduce the risk of the emergency by applying standards, policies, or protective barriers that reduce the damaging effects of unavoidable emergencies. Preparedness are the activities such as training exercises, hazard education campaigns, reinforcement procedures, and practice testing that are put in place to increase the organization or communities' ability to respond when a disaster occurs. Response actions take place before, during, and after the emergency has taken place, this includes activating and emergency response teams, formulating evacuations, and providing mass care or emergency rescue to threatened populations. Recovery is the action taken to assist a community in the repair or restoration of its condition in an effort to return to normalcy. These five phases are integrated together to improve an organization's ability to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the emergency situations and disasters that pose a risk to their community (McEntire, 2018).As a nurse leader, what steps would you take to make certain all members in your department are trained on current practices and remain compliant year over year?As a nurse leader, it is important to be familiar with their role in emergency preparedness and disaster planning.  As a leader, they have a responsibility to the community and to the hospital to ensure disaster preparedness and response by all team members involved. As mentioned above planning for an emergency or disaster requires the extensive formularization of each major emergency management phase. To be proactive in this process I would make sure I have identified any potential risks that could impact my community or environment and consider any additional services or supplies that I would need to address those risks and develop an emergency plan according to my discoveries. This is not something that can be done individually I would need to involve additional stakeholders to assist in the development of this emergency plan. Key stakeholders include my local government agencies, The Joint Commissioner, each staff member of my hospital, the surrounding community, and rescue workers. To ensure that all individuals of my emergency management team are fully aware of their responsibilities I will need to educate them accordingly and perform emergency response drills to ensure they are prepared when it is time to execute their responsibilities in a true emergency. By initiating and reintegrating these expectations annually, as a nurse leader I can better prepare my staff to respond to these unforeseen situations in an organized smooth fashion (Harris, 2018).Have you or someone you know been involved in or responsible for managing an emergency in the workplace? If you were responsible for managing that situation today, how might you handle it differently based on what you have learned this week?I personally have not been involved or responsible for managing an emergency response in my workplace, but I do know the role I play in addressing the situation if it were to arise. My current employer has various policies and procedures in place for the many different emergency situations that could take place. For example, we have different codes we refer to that each staff member is taught on how to deescalate or respond to when hired. These situational codes include when someone is a danger to themself or to others or when a child is missing. This education session takes place during orientation and must be completed before you can begin working. These computer-based learning sessions are then revisited annually in accordance with your hire date.  PROMPT QUESTION In a situation such as those described by your peers, which resources might you recommend for support in appropriate management?
