Still life as a photographic genre is rooted andtakes cues from the genre of still life painting. Still lifes were explored in earlyphotography because of long shutter times. Since objects don’t move they weresuitable for the long exposures needed to make a photo.Still life is an extremely broad genre with many subcategories, historically full ofdifferent trends. A common contemporary category of still life we are all familiarwith is food photography.Still lifes can be found dating back to the Egyptians. One of the more popular andwidely studied eras of the still life is dutch renaissance painting. Often, the objectsused have symbolic meaning referring beyond the actual documentation of what isfront of the lens.
