Somatic symptoms may result from a heightened awareness of certain bodily sensations, combined with a tendency to interpret these sensations as indicative of a medical illness. More recently, they developed Somatic Symptom Scale-8. This takes a measure of somatic symptom burden, and that cutoff scores identify persons with low, medium, high, and very high somatic symptom burden. Although screening instruments are useful as a first step in the diagnostic process, the DSM-5 criteria still must be met to diagnose somatic symptom disorders. The treatment for this includes “scheduling regular, short-interval visits to avoid the need for symptoms to get an appointment; establishing a collaborative, therapeutic alliance with the patient; acknowledging and legitimizing symptoms once the patient has been evaluated for other medical and psychiatric diseases; limiting diagnostic testing; reassuring the patient that serious medical diseases have been ruled out; educating patients about coping with physical symptoms; setting a treatment goal of functional improvement rather than cure; and appropriately referring patients to sub-specialists and mental health professionals.” (Wulsin,2005).Conversion disorder is a condition in which you have physical symptoms of a health problem but no injury or illness to explain them. Experts include conversion disorder in a wider category of medical conditions called functional neurological disorders. Researchers believe it is a way for your brain to deal with emotional stress. The American Psychiatric Association has set standards for symptoms to be diagnosed as conversion disorder: They affect your movement or senses, and you cant control them. Your not faking them, They can’t be explained by any other condition, medication, or behavior. They aren’t cause by another mental health problem, and they cause stress in social and work settings. Treatment includes psychotherapy, including occupational or physical therapy, counseling, hypnosis, and antidepressant or anti psychotic drugs. In other words, physicians find it hard to know whether the symptoms are genuine (Comer & Comer, 2021). People with conversion disorder, most times, do not consciously want to experience symptoms. Rather, it seems that the symptoms result from patients converting their psychological needs into physical, neurological symptoms (Comer & Comer, 2021).Somatic disorders are when people become obsessed, overly concerned, and distressed about the bodily symptoms they are experiencing to the point where their lives are disrupted. Unlike conversion disorder, somatic disorders are less dramatic. They also have no known cause but are identified by the skewed perception of bodily problems about a person’s concern about bodily problems. Patients who exhibit somatic or conversion symptoms are convinced that there is something medically wrong with them when it is more psychological than physical. When physicians tell physicians that their symptoms are more psychological than physical, patients will often find another physician to agree with them. People with these disorders will eventually agree to psychotherapy and psychotropic drug therapy or both (Comer & Comer, 2021). In therapy, physicians focus on the causes of the disorders, give insight, practice exposure, and implement drug therapies if needed. How can I respond to Cyrena Mabelin-Denney  Social Science Psychology PSY 470 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
