Still, it is among developed countries that chronic disease remains the most prominent health concern. According to Hajat and Stein (2018), multiple chronic conditions disproportionate burden in the developed world, with three-fourths of elderly individuals having two or more chronic diseases. These include obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and others. Many of these conditions are preventable, and the lifestyle factors underlying them (e.g., nutrition) are easily modifiable. Meanwhile, in the developed world, malnutrition, food safety, and vector-borne diseases remain increasingly prevalent (Odeyemi, 2016). Because of low food quality, food scarcity, and other factors such as poor sanitation, coupled with poor access to healthcare and vaccination, the developing world is facing an epidemic of infectious diseases and nutrition-related conditions.?The economy, politics and natural resources are deeply implicated in global health disparities. Developed countries that spend extensive resources to maintain their healthcare systems usually demonstrate improved health outcomes, due to better and easier access to health care and lower odds of premature mortality. Healthy People 2020 is a great example of a systematic, government-led approach to health promotion and disease prevention in the developed world. In contrast, poorer countries face difficulties providing even the basic resources, such as clean water and sanitation. The role of public policy in reducing health disparities is unquestionable.?As a DNP-educated nurse, I can help reduce these global health disparities by developing and implementing evidence-based health promotion and disease prevention interventions. For example, campaigns surrounding nutrition can be helpful in reducing the scope of malnutrition and other nutrition-related chronic conditions in underserved communities. A DNP-educated nurse can go further to initiate the development of science-based nutritional policies and guidelines that fit within the economic, political and resource discourse in the developed world (Hu et al., 2016).
