HRM 593: Employment Law Week 4: Religion at Work – Accommodate or… HRM 593: Employment LawWeek 4: Religion at Work – Accommodate or Conflict? Now consider one of the scenarios below. Respond to the question posed with at least one complete paragraph that includes information on what standards to apply when considering religious discrimination in the workplace. Be sure to explain your reasoning and explain fully the law and standards guiding your decision. You are the human resources manager for a mid-size corporation. Every year the corporation likes to hold an annual “holiday” party at a local venue around Christmas time. There is also a large decorated tree in the lobby of the corporate office, as well as smaller gift exchanges, a self-playing piano that cranks out Christmas carols in the lunch hall, and a holiday brunch provided for employees the last work day before Christmas. At the holiday brunch, the menu is breakfast burritos of eggs, sausage (pork), and cheese, with hash browns and juice. Two Jewish employees have approached you to say they feel discriminated against by the breakfast menu since eating pork is against their religion and the meal is not kosher. It is offensive for them to have that around their workspace during Hannukah. They do not want to have to listen to Christmas carols at lunch time, either. What do you tell them? Please address discrimination laws and laws addressing this issue in employment law. No personal opinions please, only fact-based academic answers please, and thank you!
