Racism in “Song of the South”

I watched this live-action/animated musical film this Tuesday and I love this movie very much. Despite of its low image quality, I can hardly believe it is a 1946 movie because neither the scenario nor the music is out of date even from the current point of view. I like how the character Uncle Remus( presumably a former slave) tried to teach our little Johnny to deal with the troubles in his life with optimism, and how Be’er Rabbit struggled with his enemies Be’er Fox and Be’er Bear in his adventure. Just like what Uncle Remus emphasized, “Without much strength, we are supposed to use our heads instead of our foots”, it is a good opportunity for us to learn how to use wisdom to deal with the troubles in our lives and how to face difficulties or enemies with optimism and poise.

Although I’ve heard that this great artistic work has never been released on home video in the United States due to its “so-called” racism depiction, to be honest I think it’s just kind of overreaction. Many critics such as Adam Clayton Powell Jr. considered the feature depiction of the “master-slave” relationship an “insult to American minorities” while I just feel nothing but a pure friendship beyond races and ages. When Uncle Remus told Johnny he had returned the puppy Teenchy back and he won’t tell Johnny stories any more, little Johnny cried and said “But uncle remus, you’re…the best friend I have”. When little Johnny tried to catch Uncle Remus and got hurt by the bull, he laid in the bed, keeping shouting “Uncle Remus! Come back,Uncle Remus! Come back! ” unconsciously, I don’ think Johnny was just expressing his intense feelings toward a black servant rather than a true friend. Obviously, we cannot ignore facts that Uncle Remus just got his freedom in a very short time and he kept acting like a normal slave when facing Johnny’ family, but those are just the film backgrounds. So I think it’s not a proper way to understand how a child view the friendship between him and Uncle Remus, just from an adult like Adam Clayton Powell Jr’s perspective.

In the 50s of the 20th century, even though Abraham Lincoln signed “the Emancipation Proclamation” for nearly a hundred years and black people were no longer slaves any more, they still suffereddiscriminationin many aspects or areas. Especially in the Southern Regions, segregation was still quite common and it was almost impossible for black people to vote. Maybe those critics just misunderstood the pure world in a child’ eyes or maybe the influences of that specific period were just inevitable, it’s a pity that people (including some black people) could hardly believe the friendship between a child and a black old man. They paid too much attention to the backgrounds of the film and tried to find out any clue as evidence — to describe the film as racist, rather than enjoying the interesting folk tales about the adventure of cute Be’er Rabbit, the amazing music or the fantastic animation of this great movie.

Just like Martin Luther King, Jr. said in his famous speech “I Have A Dream”, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’”, or just like one of the most famous educators, Brazilian author and scholar Paulo Freire states, “No one can be authentically human while he prevents others from being so.” equality means treating other people with respect and love, judging all the people with the same standard and believing all the human beings are the same. Of course, I don’t think the day has come, but for little Johnny, the time he ran to Uncle Remus’ house, shouting “Uncle Remus, I’ve found it! My laughing place! It’s right here…” he was definitely in his world without racism.

Abstract

The present study will investigate the use of drug among teenagers. Questions of concern are: Why do teenagers use drugs? Is the consumption and addiction of drugs more prevalent in girls than boys? Does the use of drugs have more of a positive or negative affect on teenagers? Previous research has found that adolescents use substances because of peer pressure and parents being divorced along with emotional and physical abuses. Drugs like cocaine cause various heath problems. The research method for this study will include a survey, which will be given to a 1000 teenagers of age 14-18 years. The questionnaire would be given to students in class, which they should fill in the presence of a supervisor. At the end, the students will be given a gift card for participating.

Introduction

The abuse of drugs is constantly increasing; especially drugs like cocaine, marijuana, and etc. teenagers are more vulnerable than people of any other age groups. A book by United Nations (Adolescent substance abuse: risk and protection, 2003) explains various reasons behind the use of drugs among teenagers. Adolescents go through biological, cognitive, social and psychological transitions. Socially, adolescents spend more away from home hanging out with peers. Adolescents tend to be risk takers, and substance abuse is one of the many interrelated risk behaviors. Research has shown that the major factors behind substance use in adolescents are peer and family. Less social support, stressful life events, social pressure and physical or sexual abuse has been associated with heavy substance abuse, especially among teenage girls.

Review of the Literature

Falkowski (2003) in her book states that ‘crack’ is a type of cocaine most commonly used. It is heated in pipes and the vapors are inhaled. It is also used through injections. Once it is inhaled the person experiences euphoria, the more rewarding the rush, greater the craving. The effect of cracks wears off within ten minutes. In time the frequency of use of crack increases decreasing the effects the person experienced in the initially stages. This results in more intake of cocaine in large amounts making the person a drug addict. There are numerous harmful effects of cocaine such as fatigue, irritability, reduced blood flow to the heart and brain increasing the risk of strokes. It also slows down thought process, weakens memory and makes concentration difficult.

In the study conducted by Miller (1997) indicate that teenagers from broken homes, where a father, mother or both were absent showed higher tendencies of alcohol, illicit drugs and tobacco use. While those teenagers living in the presence of both parents were less likely to involve in such activities.

According to Stern (2006), American teenagers are highly influenced by the teenage actors shown in the films. These actors are shown using drugs, smoking and drinking alcohol. However they are never shown suffering the consequences or the harmful affects caused by the use of these substances in future life. Accordingly, a content analysis of top grossing films from 1999, 2000, and 2001 was conducted. There was hardly any difference between substance users and non-substance users.Regarding their attractiveness and socioeconomic status. Simultaneously, girls were more likely to be shown engaged in such activities than boys. It was concluded that recent teen movies might show that substance use is more common, mostly risk free and appropriate for anyone.

A study was conducted in Unites states among 19,321 students from grades 7th – 12th (Barns, Welte& Hoffman, 2002). After controlling sociodemographic factors following were the findings: the relationship between binge drinking and delinquency was stronger for males than females. The relationships between alcohol measures and both delinquency and illicit drug use were stronger for younger adolescents than older adolescents. American Indians showed an added risk over other groups of being delinquent and using illicit drugs if they began drinking at an early age.

An investigation was done (Dakof, 2000) to study the gender difference in pattern of comorbidity and family functioning. A sample of 95 youth (girls 42, boys 53) referred for substance abuse treatment. . The findings indicate that male and female adolescent substance users differ in several clinically meaningful ways. The use of drugs among adolecent girls have increased drastically over the years. It is also noted that the syndrome of female adolescent substance abuse is different from the well-recognized male pattern.

Research Question

The present study will try to understand the drug use among teenagers in more depth.

Research Questions:

  1. Why do teenagers use drugs?
  2. Is the consumption and addiction of drugs more in girls than boys?
  3. Does the use of drugs have more positive than negative effects on teenagers?

Methods

Procedure

In order to conduct this survey, coordination of both students and faculty would be required. They will be informed about the purpose of the research clearly. Students will be required to answer the survey in a classroom in the presence of a supervisor. At the end of the survey, each participant will be given a gift card. Finally the surveys would be collected and the information of the participants will remain confidential.

Sample

The participants in this study will be 1000 students from different schools. Consisting of boys and girls in equal numbers i.e., 500 girls and 500 boys. The age range would be from 14-18 years, comprising students of grade 8th – 12th.

Instrument

This is a quantitative study; hence a survey will be conducted. The survey will consist of 12 questions, which will be dichotomous, and also some questions based on level of measurement.
